The Prescription for a Successful Move: Timing, Purpose, and Peace of Mind

As Melissa and I continue to reconnect with individuals we lost contact with over the years, our latest reunion was with Jason* and Sharon* (names changed). Melissa has known them since her college days in the mid-1970s. Decades flew by, but they never forgot one another. Being present for the big reunion a few weeks ago was a true joy; watching Melissa and Sharon reconnect was like watching two long-lost sisters reuniting after a lifetime of separation.

During our visit, I was fascinated to learn about Sharon’s husband, Jason. He shared the trials and tribulations of being raised by a difficult, domineering mother, and how he ultimately rose to successfully manage a major family business. Suffice it to say, I also learned a great deal about trains!

Managing an Upcoming Move

But what I found most intriguing was how he and Sharon approached managing their upcoming move.

As they described some of their current struggles, I listened intently, letting them know with a smile that I was aware of a book that could help them through this very process. Once they shared a bit more, I finally let the cat out of the bag: I had written that very guide. How clever of me!

What delighted me most was how successful they had already been in determining their timing, their why, and their how and where. Admittedly, they had been struggling with the daunting task of initiating decluttering and pulling the trigger to put their long-term home on the market. However, they were fortunate to have already hired an outside service to assist with the downsizing, and they had found a new home that will meet their needs for the foreseeable future.

Stumbling Blocks When Moving

In my forty years as a physician, I rarely found patients, friends, or family members so well-prepared and organized to meet a major life transition—though I must also give a fond nod to my cousins in Atlanta, who remarkably did the very same. Make no mistake: I consider moving to be both a deeply personal and a significant health-related issue. Yet, I was absolutely floored by how many of the traditional stumbling blocks of relocation Jason and Sharon had already countered with proactive action steps.

Ever the diplomat—but aware of the challenges ahead—I offered my insights on the physical process of decluttering, followed by words of emotional support. Leaving a home you have occupied for decades takes a real psychological toll and acknowledging that emotional weight is a vital part of the journey.

Ultimately, moving is a process. When dealt with in a proactive and intentional way, it remains a choice—a positive step forward rather than a knee-jerk reaction in the middle of a chaotic medical emergency. Congratulations are certainly in order for Sharon and Jason. They seemed to have true peace of mind with their decision, and they are firmly on track for a successful move.

Moving Intentionally

Jason and Sharon’s story is a beautiful testament to what is possible when we face aging and transition with intention. They didn’t wait for a crisis to dictate their next chapter; instead, they took control of their narrative while they had the health, time, and clarity to do so. Is downsizing hard? Absolutely. Is it emotional? Without question. But by choosing their why, how, when, and where on their own terms, they have transformed what could have been a stressful crisis into an empowering new beginning.

If you, like Jason and Sharon, know that a move is in your future but feel overwhelmed by the thought of decluttering, listing your home, or navigating the emotional weight of leaving a lifetime of memories behind, you don’t have to do it alone.

In my latest book, When It’s Time to Move—Assessing the Why, Exploring the How, I break down these exact stumbling blocks into manageable, actionable steps so you can move with dignity, peace of mind, and purpose.
